I admit that I was somewhat of a teacher's pet when I was younger, and was (and still am) an avid reader. It seems like Katie is following in my footsteps. She came home last night telling me that there would be a substitute in her class today and that her regular teacher had asked her to read a book to the class for her while she was gone. Katie was so proud that she was asked to be the only reader! She woke up this morning and first thing she said was "do you think I will be nervous to read in front of the sub teacher?" She must have thought about it all night! I picked her up today and saw her regular teacher (she was gone for a workshop during class time but was there for afterschool enrichment that they do on Wednesdays) and she said that she is just amazed at how fast and well Katie is picking up reading. When I asked Katie how it went reading to the class she said that she did great and that she read two books! Tyler is doing well, too but Katie definitely enjoys it more than him. She practices on her own time, but you have to ask (convince) Tyler to do his homework or work on reading skills. They both did great on their recent report cards and school is going really well for both of them. Tyler gets a little jealous when he hears praise for Katie from teachers or when he thinks someone in class is doing better than him at something - but not enough that it makes him really try to do it too with the exception of when he finally decided he wanted to learn his sight words and did it in just a couple of nights!
It is super cold (but no snow - boo) so we have been house bound a lot, but we went to the beautiful Greenway close to our house when the weather was decent the other day and rode bikes and played some "baseball" with a friend.
Katie got a couple of hits (great for first time ever really swinging a bat at a real ball) and Tyler tried real hard but preferred to pitch (not a good idea, by the way, to let a five year old rookie pitch to other five year olds). They are still enjoying gymnastics although Lance is threatening to take them out (jokingly of course) after watching them the other night. Katie was swinging around like a monkey on the bars and he was so worried that she was going to fall, and Tyler is definitely not as cautious there as he typically is!
I got a new car!!! Despite Tyler's wish that we get one like we saw when leaving gymnastics that was the most hideous orange color ever (that he really liked mostly because it had a rainbow sticker on it that he wants us to get too), we finally decided on a Ford Edge. So far, so good - I am loving all the techie features and hands free calls and especially the automatic start in these ridiculous temperatures. Now we will get Lance some tires for his (that he now says he wants to keep for two or three more years!!! - it would have 300,000 miles by then) and should be pretty set in the vehicle department for a while. We opted to skip the ones with third row seating (much more expensive and mostly unnecessary at this point) for now, and when we replace his eventually we will probably go with something that we can cart around more than just our family. It seems like it will be a great travel car (lots of cargo room, comfy for everyone, rides really well) - but I guess the real test will be our trip to Florida in just a month! One thing I think we both decided is that we absolutely hate the car buying process and hope that it is a long time before we have to deal with dealerships and car salesmen again (and will probably go back to the tried and true Carmax over a dealership next time after this experience). Either way, I am excited to have a new ride and can't wait to figure out all the settings!
